The Handy House located in the Historic District of Princess Anne,
Maryland is a large Federal Era home that sits on a 1.23 acre lot that would be
ideal to convert to a bed and breakfast. The home has 4636 square feet of living space.
Located on the first floor there are two bedrooms with adjoining baths,
a newly renovated kitchen, a separate dining room, living room, family room, large foyer,
and another bathroom, plus two screened-in porches (the front porch being totally refurbished).
There are 3 or 4 more bedrooms located on the second floor, two separate bathrooms,
a sitting room (4th Bedroom) and an office/study. All are served by front and rear stairways.
The house has a total of 5 fireplaces, four downstairs and one upstairs. Some rooms have central air-conditioning.
The Colonel George Handy House is a fine example of Federal Era domestic architecture,
one of a handful of prominent early nineteenth-century
historic houses that remain in this county seat of Somerset County.
The Handy House still retains a high percentage of its original exterior and interior historic fabric.
Features include original exterior beaded siding, six-over-six sash windows as well as an
early nineteenth century kitchen. The interior of the main house features a period staircase,
original chair rail and baseboard moldings, and gouge work decorated mantels.
In four rooms of the first story the floors are a quarter-sawn yellow pine
which have been restored to a red-hued natural finish. Surviving in the former kitchen
(now family room) is a large cooking fireplace, an exposed joist ceiling
and a small stairway to the former servant’s quarters.
An excellent photographic copy of an oil portrait of Colonel Handy hangs
over the fireplace mantel in the living room and will convey with the house.
This is truly a house steeped in history with a commanding presence in a town that is just being discovered.
